Publishing Opportunity for Students: Your Queer Experience in Higher Education

10 May 2021 4:28 PM | Anonymous

Lizzie Haroldsen and Grace Houghton are the editors of a proposed collection of autobiographical, memoir type reflections by queer students about their experiences in higher education.

Lizzie and Grace both participated in the Denver Publishing Institute hosted by the University of Denver last summer which is where they hatched this project.  They have a literary agent and have interested publishers, so this is a great opportunity for folks to get their stories out there.

They have 11 authors committed already.  Since they are looking for the greatest diversity in the volume possible, they are specifically in search of (but not in any way limited to) folks in the queer community who are: East Asian, male, trans male, indigenous, Pacific Islander, Drag, Pansexual, Disabled, Intersex, and Non-Christian religious.

Lizzie and Grace are still looking for contributors to this volume and would love to receive drafts of student stories.  They are NOT looking for research papers or fictional writing.

Please share this email with students (undergrad or grad (or recent alum), and have anyone interested please contact Lizzie and Grace at:  outoftheclosetsubmissions@gmail.com

A few details:

  • Memoir/autobiography
  • Can be narrow or broad in scope (e.g. the story of one significant event during your time in college or the larger story of how you navigated college)
  • 800-5000 words (5-15 pages double spaced)
  • First Draft needed sometime in June
  • They will work with you on editing
  • If you are interested, contact them soon.  They are super nice and flexible!
