The Department of French and Francophone Studies at The Pennsylvania State University is recruiting outstanding candidates for advanced study leading to the M.A. and Ph.D. degrees. We are able to provide all of our full-time students with generous financial support and full tuition grants. Penn State’s French and Francophone Studies graduate program is unique for its long-established Ph.D. specializations in Literature and Culture and Society and an interdisciplinary orientation that fosters innovative approaches to a broad variety of objects of study. We offer three distinctive dual degrees. The first grants students a Ph.D. in French and Francophone Studies and Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies (a top-ranked department nationally). The second grants a Ph.D. in French and Francophone Studies and African Studies. The third grants a Ph.D. in French and Francophone Studies and Visual Studies.

 

Faculty expertise spans women’s, gender and sexuality studies, (post-)colonial history and Francophone studies, linguistics, early modern studies, theater and film studies, material culture and aesthetics, cultural theory, and popular and media culture. Faculty and students also work on areas beyond metropolitan France, such as the Caribbean, the Indian Ocean, North and West Africa.

 

As a community, our department embraces and supports its students and faculty. Our graduate students play a crucial role by bringing their diverse backgrounds and experiences to our intellectual debates. We aspire to include everyone in our individual and collective engagement with shaping the production and sharing of knowledge about and throughout the francophone world. 

 

Our students receive extensive pedagogical training and teach courses in language, literature, culture, and linguistics at all undergraduate levels. Grants to support our students’ conference travels and dissertation research are available through a variety of internal sources, including Penn State’s Humanities Institute and Center for Humanities and Information. In addition, the Department offers the opportunity to participate in a year-long exchange program with the Université de Strasbourg. Finally, students in FFS benefit from numerous initiatives, academic programs, and centers within Penn State’s College of the Liberal Arts, including the Africana Research Center, the African Feminist Initiative, the Rock Ethics Institute, the Committee for Early Modern Studies, the Center for Global Studies, and the Center for Democratic Deliberation. All senior PhD students benefit from a Humanities Dissertation Release, during which they receive full funding to carry out research. The French and Francophone Studies Program at Florida State University is currently accepting applications to the MA and PhD degree programs for the academic year 2022-2023.  

The French Program at Florida State University offers MA and PhD degrees spanning many aspects of French and Francophone literatures, cultures, and societies. Housed within the Department of Modern Languages and Linguistics, the French Program emphasizes innovative interdisciplinarity across media and methodologies. Starting in 2022, we will offer an introductory course in Global French Studies as a cornerstone of our graduate program. 

 

Due to COVID-19 and the circumstances of the global pandemic, the FSU Graduate School has waived the GRE requirement for MA applicants entering in Fall 2022. We are also working productively with the Graduate School and the College of Arts and Sciences to respond to the specific challenges of international students.

The Winthrop-King Institute for Contemporary French and Francophone Studies 

Graduate students are centrally involved in speaker visits, symposia, and conferences organized by the Winthrop-King Institute, which for decades has been a leader in Francophone Studies. Students’ consistent opportunity to learn with speakers and writers-in-residence, as well as to interview speakers and participate in the organization of conferences makes our program one of the most exciting in the US.  

Recent and forthcoming speakers include Laurent Dureuil, Deborah Jenson, Lydie Moudileno, Leïla Slimani, Baloji, Pat Masioni, Charles Forsdick, Yarimar Bonilla, Edwidge Danticat, Melissa Hyde, Alice Kaplan, Kathleen Long, Alain Mabanckou, Felicia McCarren, Jean-Marc Moura, Kristin Ross, and Abdourahman Waberi. In 2021-22, the Institute has organized conferences and symposia that will be on zoom in the fall on Postcolonial realms of Memory and Gender in the Maghreb as a part of a Global Africa Series of events as well as the conference focused on Michaël Ferrier's writing, "Tokyo Stories," in the spring. Beyond Winthrop-King Institute events, the French program has also hosted international conferences in French and Francophone Studies, notably WIF 2018 "Le bruit des femmes" and the  2019 Nineteenth-Century French Studies colloquium at the Sarasota campus.  

Graduate students receive extensive professional training and gain teaching experience in a diverse environment, as led by the program coordinator, Dr. Virginia Osborn. They also benefit from a range of international exchange and internship programs.  

Winthrop-King Enhanced Teaching Assistantships in French Enhanced Teaching Assistantships are available on a competitive basis to applicants to the graduate program in French. In addition to the stipend, award-holders are eligible to apply to conference travel support, tuition waivers and health insurance support. Doctoral candidates also receive a $5,000 grant for approved research or study abroad.  

Winthrop-King Conference, Research, and Travel Grants Graduates majoring in French are eligible for funding to support the presentation of papers at regional, national, and international conferences, as well as other forms of research travel.  

Winthrop-King Summer Doctoral Fellowship This Fellowship for the amount of $5,000 is awarded to ABD students in the doctoral program to allow them to dedicate a summer to full-time work on dissertation research.  

Internships Abroad and Exchanges Graduate students are eligible to apply for our funded internship with France Terre d’Asile in Paris, as well as the exchange program with the Université des Antilles among others. While travel is restricted currently due to COVID-19, we anticipate reactivating these programs when it is safe to do so.

The Department of French and Francophone Studies at Vassar College invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position, beginning Fall 2022. We seek candidates with expertise in pre-1800 studies with a focus in ecocriticism and/or performance studies, combined with one or more of the following areas of specialization: New World Studies, Atlantic Studies, Migration Studies, and Visual Studies. The successful candidate will teach French language courses at all levels as well as courses focusing on pre-1800 studies. The candidate will also be able to teach in one or more of following Multidisciplinary programs, such as: Environmental Studies, Medieval/Renaissance Studies, Africana Studies, or the Consortium on Forced Migration. Excellence in teaching and evidence or clear promise of scholarship are essential. 

Candidates must have a PhD in hand by June 2022; native or near-native fluency in French and English and a strong commitment to teaching French language and literature/culture courses at all levels in a liberal arts environment are expected. In addition to contributing to the departmental curriculum, this position will include teaching in one or more multidisciplinary programs on campus, as well as the possibility of directing our program in Paris. Teaching load in the first year is four courses followed by five courses annually in subsequent years.
